F1/10th Team
About the team
Small cars, real autonomy, and a lot of laps.
The F1/10th Team is a student team at Villanova that designs, builds, and programs a 1/10-scale autonomous race car. The car carries the same kinds of sensors and computing found on full-size automated vehicles, including lidar, cameras, and an onboard computer, packed into a chassis small enough to carry under one arm.
Students work across the full autonomy stack: perceiving the track, planning a fast and safe line, and controlling the car at speed. Ideas are tested first in simulation and then on the track, where every lap shows what works and what does not.
The team is open to students from any major and any year. No racing or robotics experience is needed, only curiosity and a willingness to learn by building.
What you will do
On the team, you could be…
-
01
Building a race car from a box of parts
Put together the chassis, wheels, onboard computer, lidar, and battery, and learn how every part works with the others.
-
02
Teaching the car to see the track
Turn raw lidar scans into a picture of the track walls, then plan a path the car can follow through them.
-
03
Tuning it until it holds the racing line
Adjust planning and control until the car drives a fast, smooth line, lap after lap.
-
04
Racing head to head against another autonomous car
Share the track with a second car, where passing safely is part of the challenge.
